On December 26th 2020, Taf Africa Foundation held its second edition of Taf Icon at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre. We celebrated and awarded the Gambia musical legend, the ingenious man, Mr Oko Drammeh. Oko Drammeh, the prolific Gambian music promoter, has organised more musical concerts and festivals of African musicians than anyone else on any continent. He has been an outstanding contributor to the expansion and elevation of African music. An ethnomusicologist, disk jockey and producer Oko is famous for organising concerts worldwide, the largest being the yearly African Music Festival that attracts over 10,000 festival goers. Moreover, this phenomenon is largely credited for the spreading popularity of African music around the world and has continued to encourage African music and its artists via concerts, television programs, festivals, symposiums, and radio. Later, he was appointed as the promotions manager and producer of a Gambian band named Ifang Bondi (formerly Super Eagles), through which he garnered more knowledge about the Gambian music landscape. In 1981, he relocated to the Netherlands. While in Europe, he grasped that Ifang Bondi and African music on the whole, was distinctive and could contest with music from other areas of the world. Most of the major names in African music including Angelique Kidjo, Osibisa, Franco, Lucky Dube, Miriam Makeba, Mory Kante, Papa Wemba Youssou Ndour, Jaliba Kuyateh, Salif Keita, Manu Dibang and a plethora of others, have performed on the festivals’ stages. In light of that, Mr. Drammeh was not only celebrated in grand style but also to inform the general citizenry about his achievements, and to serve as an inspiration to the younger generation to emulate and continue the great works of Oko in the advancement of African Music to the entire world. In addition to the presentation, the event was accompanied with a number of special performances and virtual congratulatory messages from colleagues and friends of Mr Oko Drammeh from all over the world. There was also a cocktail and networking session right after the event.

Once again, The Taf Africa Foundation Congratulates Mr. Oko Drammmeh for this achievement, we say thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Gambia’s music Icon.
